Death of Fr. Norman Edward Fitzgerald C.S.Sp.
We regret to announce the death of Fr. Norman Fitzgerald C.S.Sp. Aged 93, he died Sunday, 7th October 2018 in Marian House.
Norman was born on 8th February 1925 to Mona (née MacAuley) and Edward (Fitzgerald) in Bridge Street, Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. He went to primary school in the local CBS and did his secondary studies in Rockwell College. From there he moved to Kilshane where he was professed in 1944 before moving to Kimmage Manor to study Philosophy and Theology. He prefected in St. Mary’s College, Rathmines from 1946 to 1948, and did a BA in Philosophy.
Ordained in Clonliffe College in 1953, Fr. Norman took up his first appointment the following year in Sierra Leone and would serve in the west African country for over 25 years. He taught in Christ the King College, Bo for 6 years and in 1960 was the Founder / Principal of St. Paul's Secondary School in Pujehun. After 8 years in Pujehun followed by a sabbatical, he moved to Freetown as Education Secretary, a post in which he remained until his return to Ireland in 1981. He was also heavily involved in youth chaplaincy and development work.
Fr. Norman was Bursar in the Blackrock College Community for the next 8 years. From 1989 he served in a pastoral role in Shankill Parish. He was the first Executive Director of Refugee Trust (now Vita), later becoming its Chairperson for a decade and then Honorary President, and he was a board member of Aidlink from its outset for a number of years. He was Chaplain in St. Andrew's Parish (Westland Row) from 1995 to 2000, and Chaplain to the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity (in Drumcondra) for the next 8 years. He moved to Marian House late last year from Blackrock College Community where he had returned to live some years earlier.

Wednesday, 10th October 2018 - Prayers followed by removal to Holy Spirit Church, Kimmage for Funeral Mass at 11.30am. Burial afterwards in Dardistown Cemetery.
