Planting Seeds of Change

Vita's 2007-2009 schools campaign was a great success. It raised great awareness about the vital importance of trees, in particular the Moringa Tree, for the development of sustainable livelihoods for the people of Africa and the protection of the world's environment.

Thanks to the support of Irish schools nationwide Vita planted thousands of trees which are now assisting people in Eritrea and Ethiopia to escape from a life of poverty and starvation.

The Magic of the 'Miracle Tree'

The Moringa or Miracle Tree is one of the keys to ending hunger and malnutrition in many parts of the world affected by poverty, drought, disease and starvation. It is fast growing, drought tolerant and pest resistant. It is the ultimate multipurpose plant as it can be used for the following purposes:

Food: The leaves and flowers can be eaten raw or cooked and the seeds are used to produce vegetable oil
Water: The winged seeds are used to purify dirty water
Soap: The winged seeds can also be used to make soaps and creams
Rope: Part of the bark can be used for rope making
Fuel: Branches from the tree can be burnt as firewood
Medicine: Applications include relieving stomach ache and even fighting childhood blindness
