|  | | Vita Ethiopia – Income Generation | In Arba Minch allot of effort has gone into supporting cooperatives and small scale enterprises for income generation. Income generating activities included horticulture, food preparation, bread making and vegetable oil production.
In Arba Minch by the end of 2008, 4 cooperatives and 6 small scale enterprises were formed in 6 sectors of activity some of which are already mentioned. As a result of these activities job opportunities were created for 167 individuals of whom 75% were youth.
Examples:
From July to December 2008 Andnet Agricultural Cooperative collected 10,929 Bir from the sale of tomato, cabbage, potato, maize. In the same period Tenkir food processing raised 4,750 Birr from the sale of bread and processed food items. Another women’s group in Arba Minch has been supported to build and sell fuel efficient stoves.
Weaving – two weaving cooperative workshops were constructed and equipped with office furniture and accounting materials and a generator for electricity. Forty four men have been enabled to weave their products in a dry and well lit environment. The result has been that men have been able to stay at home with their families and not be forced to migrate to the cities with all the resultant problems such as women headed households and transmission of HIV/AIDS back from the cities to the rural areas.
