Building Sustainable Livelihoods
Vita Programmes in Ethiopia

About Ethiopia:

Ethiopia is located in the Horn of Africa with a total area of 1,112,000 square kilometres. It embraces a complex variety of nations, nationalities and peoples, and linguistic groups. According to the Statistical Abstract of 2007 of the Central Statistical Agency, the total projected population of the country in July 2008 is estimated to be 79,221,000 persons, of whom 65,996,000 are rural and 13,225,000, urban. Ethiopia is the third most populous country in Africa after Nigeria and Egypt. The economically active population, between the ages of 14 and 49, is estimated to be about 50 percent.

Ethiopia remains one of the poorest countries in the world - it ranks 170 out of 177 countries on the 2004 Human Development Index. Ethiopia has an annual per capita income of around $100 (less than one-fourth of the sub-Saharan average). Ethiopia has the poorest human development indicators in the world with more than three-quarters of the population living on less than $1 per day.

Ethiopia's poverty-stricken economy is based on agriculture, accounting for almost half of GDP, 60% of exports, and 80% of total employment. The agricultural sector suffers from frequent drought and poor cultivation practices.

Vita in Ethiopia:

Vita has been working in Ethiopia since 2005. Our Country Director in Ethiopia, Oliver Ryan, has over 20 year’s experience of development work in the Horn of Africa. Oliver has a staff of 12 – all Ethiopian nationals.

Currently Vita works in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region of Ethiopia (SNNP region). Vita plans to expand to another region of the country within the next three years. Our main centres of operation in SNNP region are Arba Minch, Chencha and Hammer Woredas (Districts) in the South West of the country (Arba Minch is 500kms approximately from the capital Addis Ababa). Vita have an small representative office in Addis Ababa as well as a field office in Arba Minch where the programme team are based.

Vita works in Ethiopia to tackle food insecurity in Chencha and Hammer Woredas. Vita supports communities to enhance crop and livestock production and generate off-farm income. Vita also understands the importance of protecting the natural resource base and works to conserve and where necessary rehabilitate local environments. Vita use Community Led Total Sanitation as an innovative community entry point strategy as a means to empower local communities to take responsibility for their own development.
