| | | Vita Ethiopia – Natural Resource Management | | | Recurrent drought (most likely linked to the effects of climate change) is happening in Hammer which has led to the migration of the men folk with animals in search of pasture and so has slowed down development initiatives.
Degradation of rangeland is a major problem which Vita are addressing with the community through area enclosures.
In 2008 for example, 40 hectares of degraded common land were enclosed in Hammer following an exposure visit of local elders facilitated by Vita.
Area enclosures can be seen as a beginning to tackling the pervasive problems of soil erosion in Hammer which is undermining the capacity of the environment to support the people in their pastoralist livelihood strategy.
In Chencha Woreda (district) a steering committee has been formed in collaboration with the Woreda Women’s Affairs Office to introduce fuel efficient stoves which will reduce the fuel wood being cut for use in the stoves.
In Shama (Chencha) 50 farmers participated in soil and water conservation training. Two hectares of communal land was planted with over 20,000 different agro-forestry seedlings. | | | | | | | |
