| | | Vita Eritrea – Natural Resource Management | | | Natural resource management is a fundamental part of the work that Vita does. Environmental degradation undermines efforts to tackle food insecurity therefore it is vital to conserve and protect the local environment on which food production is based.
In Eritrea Vita supports soil and water conservation. In Hagaz sub region considerable work was done to build check dams to slow run off and prevent soil erosion. A total of 23,356 m3 of check dams were constructed during 2008.
In Hamelmalo during 2008 check dams were constructed and also terracing work was carried out. Local communities contribute to this work through the provision of their labour.
In Debub region Vita are involved in delineation and development of rangeland and grazing enclosures. Wild grass seed is being sourced from local farmers and planted in these areas. Natural woodland restoration enclosures are also being developed.
