| | | Vita Eritrea – Forestry and Nutrition | | | As part of Forestry Development various nurseries are supported in the production, distribution and planting of tree seedlings.
During 2008 in Eritrea a total of 1,093,613 seedlings of various tree species were planted with support from Vita. 783,602 of these seedlings were sisal seedlings – sisal is excellent for soil stabilisation which is vital to conserve the natural resource base.
Vita are supporting communities to plant moringa trees. This tree is also know as the miracle tree and has many uses. One very important use is the eating of the leaves which taste a bit like spinach when cooked. 10,840 Moringa seedlings were planted in 2008 and 634 women were trained on how to cook the dish. Pamphlets on the use of Moringa have been published in Tigrinya and distributed to communities and implementing partners in the various project sites.
In addition 3,050 Neem trees were planted in three Kebabis (clusters of villages) of Shebek, Adi Arey and Adi Omer in Hagaz sub-region. The Neem is also called a miracle tree and Neem extracts are used as herbal remedies (Note: the Neem tree is know as “40 cures” in the Swahili language).
Green Clubs
During 2008, 10 green clubs were formed in 10 schools in Anseba region. 324 students, 39 teachers and 7 Ministry of Agriculture staff received training. Various agricultural tools have been purchased for the 10 green clubs.
