In September 2006, Refugee Trust International (RTI) officially launched its new name, Vita, with a challenge at the National Ploughing Championships.

The Vita - Farmer v City Slicker Challenge took place at the Macra Na Feirme Stand where 15 Farmers pitched their skills against 15 City Slickers in a Milking Competition. The challenge was launched by Damian O’ Reilly from RTE’s Farm Week, along with Noel Hickey and Richie Mulally from the winning Kilkenny, All-Ireland, Hurling Team.

The choice of The Ploughing Championships to relaunch RTI as Vita was very apt given the change of Vita’s focus to building sustainable livelihoods in Ethiopia and Eritrea, where it is working with local farmers to enable them to return to productivity.

Not so long ago Irish people too were forced from their traditional agricultural livelihoods as small farm sizes and successive crop failure meant the land could no longer support their families. As a result, ownership and the farming of land became deeply ingrained in the Irish psyche.

The Vita - Farmers V City Slickers Challenge at The National Ploughing Championships paid tribute to the common histories of the Ethiopian/ Eritrean and Irish farming communities and of the acceptance that aid and investment righted problems that once seemed insurmountable in the Irish Farming Community.
