| | March 2009 | | | | | | | Vita Urges Support for Easter Appeal Help reduce poverty in Africa and climate change worldwide | Irish development agency Vita has launched its Easter appeal urging the public to support its ongoing work to reduce poverty in Africa and help tackle climate change.
People in Africa are amongst those who contribute least to climate change, yet if affects them most harshly. Vita’s goal is to implement environmentally sustainable programmes that respect the dignity and human rights of all. Vita’s stove programme promotes lasting improvements in the livelihoods of 100,000 people in the Horn of Africa.
The key is the prize-winning fuel efficient stove. This innovative appliance improves the health and well being of thousands of women and their families, while at the same time helping to tackle climate change. Because of their efficiency, these stoves deliver a dramatic reduction in C02 emissions. And because they require so little wood, 60% fewer trees are cut down for fuel. The great benefit of this is that trees capture and lock in carbon acting as a carbon sink. So more trees, means less carbon in the atmosphere.
As part of the Easter appeal, Vita is offering the Easter Chick Pack – An Eggstra Special Gift this Easter! For only €25 the pack consists of 4 chickens and a sparkle of imagination. Vita’s Poultry Programme can provide a family in Ethiopia with a source of income through the sale of chicks, eggs, and meat. The chickens are a vital source of nutrition and their waste makes amazing organic fertiliser. A family will receive enough chicken feed for three months and be provided with training on how to take care of the chickens. These chicken packs are destined for families in the Shama district of Ethiopia.
To buy an Easter Chick Pack for a family or to support Vita’s Stoves programme, call 1850 30 80 90 or log on www.vita.ie.
