Refugee Trust International launches its new name Vita
at The National Ploughing Championships

“Vita - Farmers V City Slickers Challenge”

On Wednesday September 27th 2006, Refugee Trust International will be officially launching its new name, Vita with a challenge at the National Ploughing Championships.

The Vita - Farmers v City Slickers Challenge will be launched by Damian O’ Reilly from RTE’s Farm Week, along with Noel Hickey and Richie Mulally from the winning All Ireland Kilkenny Hurling Team, at the Macra Na Feirme stand (T1 383) in Tullow at 11am.

In the challenge, 15 Farmers will pitch their skills against 15 City Slickers in a Milking Competition. The overall winner of the challenge will receive a generously donated cash prize of €500.

Vita means not only “life” but “way of life”. The decision to change the name was taken by the Board of Refugee Trust International after several months of detailed analysis and consideration. The new name better reflects the evolving nature of the work Vita now does as its focus has changed from refugees to poor and marginalised people in its programme countries of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Kenya.

The approach to the development of Vita’s “building sustainable livelihoods” focuses on the strengths and capabilities of poor and marginalized people. It encourages and supports them to use all resources available to meet the challenges they encounter in their everyday lives by ensuring that they participate in both poverty analysis and programme design.

Commenting at the Vita Launch John Wallace, Chief Executive of Vita said,

”We are a small organisation but a very effective one and this is borne out by the level of support forthcoming from Irish Aid and the EU. We believe we are building up a reputation for being a quality niche player in the development field where we work in the Horn of Africa.

Our rural involvement in Africa makes the Ploughing Championships therefore an ideal vehicle for the launch of our new name Vita.”
