A Few Words on the Fund...
We as a family decided last September that Keith, Barry, Kevin, Paul and myself together with Gearoid Horan nephew and Declan and Ivor O’Loughlin and any one else who wished to join us would take part in the Sean Kelly Cycle event to raise money to combat hunger in Africa. This is posted on Facebook under my page called Team Vita Sean Kelly Cycle with Geraldine and Jean forming the ambulance crew.
With the changed circumstances we formally launched the Geraldine O’Loughlin Fund, Helping Women in Africa on Friday 6th May 2011.
The area we have chosen to be supported by the fund is Chencha in southern Ethiopia because the landscape is not too different from Clonaslee or anywhere else in Laois.
80% of the women are deserted as their husbands have gone to work or escape to the cities or Russia or some such place.
For the poorest families, average life expectancy is only 41 years. Average family size is six of which only 2 or possibly 3 make it to their 10th birthday. They have never experienced a day where they would not be hungry.
Geraldine always thought and prayed and contributed to helping those people and tonight we as a family are going to donate 5000 euro to launch this fund in her memory.
