In Ethiopia, thousands of people are facing hunger this year. With a little help, they could plant vital crops to save them from the hunger and drought that they now face. This appeal is part of the ‘Friends of Fr. Kevin Doheny Fund’, which has been established in memory of our founder.
Hunger and Climate Change in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is one of the most food insecure countries in the world. Over 60 million are facing a food crisis due to the effects of climate change, drought, poverty and soaring food prices. The price of basic cereals has dramatically increased in recent years. To survive, families must now grow their own food or face starvation. Adanech is one of these people. If she misses the summer planting season, she and her family will face hunger for the rest of the year.
Planting Seeds of Change in Ethiopia
In Vita, we are helping Adanech and more than 4,400 in her community of Chencha by providing the seeds, tools and training needed to plant enough drought-resistant crops to feed their families. They will also have extra crops to sell at affordable prices to another 50,000 people in the surrounding area.

10th Anniversary of Vita founder, Fr. Kevin Doheny
This year, Vita is commemorating the 10th anniversary of the death of our founder, Fr. Kevin Doheny who set up Refugee Trust International (now called Vita), after his work in Chencha during the 1974 Ethiopian famine. We are asking you to make a special effort to help us carry on his legacy in Africa.
