| How the Vita Carbon Offset Plan Works | | €40 will provide a family with a fuel efficient stove plus the Moringa tree seedlings that they’ll need for the future. |
| | Through the efficiency of the stoves and the carbon captured by the planted trees, this €40 will offset the equivalent of 5.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions. |
| | €80 will provide two families with a fuel efficient stove and Moringa seedlings and will offset 11 tonnes of CO2 emissions. |
| | The average person in Ireland has an annual carbon footprint of 11 tonnes. |
| | €80 or a standard monthly donation of €7 offsets the average person’s annual carbon footprint. |
| | Ethiopia The food shortage months. Children searching for grazing land. |
| | | Eritrea Degraded land caused by climate change. |

| | Our goal is to implement environmentally sustainable programmes that respect the dignity and human rights of all. | Eritrea’s four million people, particularly women and children, are all in great need of the improved fuel efficient stove. Since 2005, Vita and our government partners in Eritrea have enabled over 10,000 women to install the stove in their homes and change their lives. In 2009, 3,000 families are awaiting the support of Vita to install stoves in their homes.
When you donate a stove, the funds are transferred directly to Eritrea to our stove project bank account, and then used to provide moulds, accessories, training and support for the Women’s Association in rural areas to allow their members to build the stoves.
When a stove is completed, the local government sign with the individual women on a form, and these forms are then compiled onto a central register in the Vita office in the capital Asmara.
The Ministry of Energy carry out monitoring surveys on 5% of stoves installed to ensure that they have been installed and are working properly. Vita employs government approved auditors to conduct an annual audit of the stoves project which shows how funds were used. A maximum of 10% of funding is allowed for administration.
With the funds raised in Ireland, Vita hopes one day that every single one of Eritrea’s 500,000 families will have the joy and benefit of a new stove, which would also save 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 emission !! | | |
| | | | | | Vita's Work | | | Fuel Efficient Stove | | The award winning fuel-efficient stove is built and installed by local women. It uses three times less wood fuel than traditional stoves. The decrease in smoke emissions reduces respiratory illness and eye problems thereby improving the health and wellbeing of thousands of women and their families, while at the same time helping to tackle climate change. |
|
| | | Moringa Tree | | Vita’s Moringa Tree planting initiative plays an important role in ending hunger. The Moringa or Miracle tree can be used as a source of food, for purifying water, for fuel, and for making rope. The leaves can be cooked and eaten and are a vital source of nutrition especially during the food shortage months. Vita has grown and distributed over 100,000 Moringa trees in Africa. |

| | | Climate change is a global crisis with global implications | | | | Already, millions of the world’s poorest people are suffering the effects of climate change, including unpredictable rainfall & worsening drought. Increased hardship and food shortages are the end result. |
| | These are the people who contribute least to climate change, yet it affects them the most. Is that fair? We don’t think so. |
| | That’s why we’ve developed a 3 Step Action Plan for people who care about this issue and want to do something meaningful about it right now! |
